“12 Apps of Christmas: 1st Day”

by Bonnie on December 2, 2011

If you have read my blog, by now you know I have a small obsession with my iPad. Okay, okay, maybe a BIG obsession!  Since my husband came home with it last year, I have been using it for just about everything, including my music therapy session.  So, in the spirit of the holidays, I’m going to share 12 of my favorite apps/iPad resources to the tune of the 12 days of Christmas!  Hop on your sleigh and bring on the jolly cause here we go!

♫On the first day of Christmas my true love gave to me, the best resource for special needs apps.♫

squidalicious.com is a blog written by Shannon Des Roches Rosa, a mom with an amazing 11 year old boy named Leo. Leo has Autism.  Shannon writes that the iPad has changed Leo’s and her world forever.  Not only does she talk about how the iPad has impacted them, but she shares review after review of apps that have helped Leo learn and grow.  In fact, she has reviewed so many apps that she decided to compile a spreadsheet of all these great apps and share the link on her site for FREE!  Shannon lists 100+ apps and 30+ app resources for fundraising, research, education and therapy.  Can I get a WOOT for Shannon!? =)  I hope you will get a chance to check out the spreadsheet and her blog, even if you don’t have an iPad!  Her insight is honest and her resources have been my go to for all things iPad.

Need more convincing?  Check out Leo’s spotlight in the iPad: One Year video below (start at 4:40):

So I saw this blog post…and then I saw this video: http://techcrunch.com/2011/11/30/welcome-to-the-future-every-instrument-in-this-song-is-from-an-ipad-app/……and THEN I received a “pick of the week” app from Starbucks today (for MadPad)….and my desire for an iPad grew exponentially :) . Thanks for sharing your reviews/ideas – even thought I don’t have one, I still like to see what’s happening in the iPad-for-music-therapy world!

The iPad gods are beckoning you! ;-) Really though, if you are considering an iPad, I’d be glad to share why mine is invaluable to me as a private practice MT. Oh…and I haven’t forgotten about the “shop” page. I have a few things up my sleeve. I’m hoping to launch part of it in early 2012, so stay tuned! =)

I’m finally getting to dig into (and download) these apps you’ve posted! thank you! You and I are very much in the same boat, with our love for people with special needs, and the iPad. :) I bought an iPad2 for my music studio as soon as they were released last Spring and it has revolutionized the way I am reaching my music students on the spectrum. The first thing I downloaded was GarageBand of course, and just even that app has given me countless, productive hours creating music with most of my students. Apps for Autism, by Lois Jean Brady (who is a fantastic OT) has been a awesome resource for me. Actually, I have an idea…. :)

Yeah! I love hearing how folks use their iPad in music therapy. And thanks for sharing the Apps for AUtism resource. Can’t wait to see what you have up your sleeve! ;-)
