The “Under The Sea” camp is a one-week music therapy camp that will be offered this Summer with the goal of communicating the message that teens and adults with special needs can be empowered through the arts! Throughout the week, campers will express themselves through engaging music experiences like drumming, shaking, strumming, tapping and singing as they adventure through beach and ocean themed musical styles. Dance experiences like the hula, limbo and even freestyle will strengthen campers’ fine and gross motor skills and create opportunities for social interaction with their peers.  Campers will also create a piece of “Under The Sea” artwork that will compliment each day’s musical style and dance experience. At the week’s end, campers will showcase their talents in a performance for friends and family.

Last Summer, I collaborated with two fantastic ladies, Amanda, a fellow music therapist, and Kellie, a special education teacher and business owner.  Our camp, “We Are The World” featured music, art and dance from North America, South America, Europe, Africa and Asia.  Even though the camp was small (7 campers) we scrapped every free resource we could get our hands on to make it a success for each camper.  This Summer, our goal is to raise $2,000 by March 31, 2012 to help defer the cost of supplies, promotions and tuition in order to offer a full range of adaptive and engaging arts resources to a max number of campers.

And that’s where YOU come in! Summer camps can be expensive, especially for families that have children with special needs.  Your financial support would not only ensure that any family of a child with special needs can access this camp without breaking the bank but it would also provide an opportunity for a teen or adult with special needs to experience the arts to their highest potential.  To support “Under The Sea” click on the secure “Support Camp” PayPal button below.  AND be sure to check back to the groovygarfoose.com for regular updates on our goal and daily blogposts of how YOUR support is making the difference once the camp is under way! Thank you for your time and consideration. =)
