Music Therapy as a Related Service
The US Dept of Education acknowledges Music Therapy as a related service. The SEMTAP or Special Education Music Therapy Assessment Process, is a criterion based assessment tool designed for children with a current IEP to determine need for music therapy services. SEMTAPs must be administered by a board certified music therapist. Music therapists follow all rules and regulations as a related service under IDEA including the assessment and treatment process. A request for a SEMTAP can come from a parent, teacher, therapist or anyone considered a member of the child’s treatment team.
How Can Music Therapy Support IEP Goals?
Music Therapy on an IEP can address a myriad of non-musical goals including but not limited to cognitive goals like identifying numbers, colors and letters, counting, telling time and calendar concepts; behavioral goals like self-regulation, attention, and focus, communication goals like answering Wh questions (who, what, where, when, why), vocabulary development, requesting and labeling, and life skills goals like grooming, appropriate manners, and safety.
